   Haitian statesman, general, president
   Born in Port-au-Prince, Anne-Alexandre Sabès, known as Pétion, was a mulatto French officer who joined the insurgents of the French colony of Saint-Domingue against the expedition led by General charles leclerc (1802). Pétion was, with jean-jacques dessalines and henry christophe, one of the principal generals responsible for routing the French in 1803. He contributed to the writing of the republican constitution of Haiti (1806) and was named president in 1807, a position that he held until his death.
